Clear Lake, Iowa!

September 8, 2011

Clear Lake, Iowa, one of the most special places in my heart!  I have spent my entire life visiting this place.  Not a summer has gone by that I haven’t either spent weeks there or even the entire summer.  Nothing beats sipping coffee in the morning on the dock with your feet skimming the water.  Or cruising around the edge of the lake at 5 mph with country music in the background.  Or swimming around the dock with a yummy cold beer in hand.  Or attending one of the many fun summer events going on in the town square.  Yes my friends, Labor Day weekend called for a trip to Clear Lake!

Much to my surprise it was either rainy, windy, or cold the entire trip, but I have traditions for that too, so needless to say it was a relaxing weekend!

Sarah and I flew to Des Moines on Friday afternoon, with a quick trip to Trader Joe’s, we were stocked up for the weekend and on the road to the lake.

Friday night was pretty low key.  We did however make an amazing dinner of NY strip steaks and a wasabi arugula salad with mini heirloom tomatoes, jalapeno’s, avocado, and a creamy cilantro dressing!  It was outstanding.  I am still daydreaming about that meal and it was almost a week ago.  We watched a few episodes of season two of Lost, and headed to bed.

Saturday morning we sipped coffee by the lake and ate lunch at my most favorite place in town, Starboard Market.  If you are ever in town I highly recommend checking them out.  It’s a tiny little place where everything is home-made and being as they are so popular and only open from 11ish-3ish you better get there early!

Starboard!!!

My all time fav is their cheesy cornbread soup.  I would do almost anything to have this more than once a year!

Pure Perfection

After we stuffed ourselves we headed back to the cabin, cleaned the boat out and the rain rolled in, which lead to……

Coffee and Puzzles!

While listening to country music on the only radio in the cabin.

The toughest puzzle was a cat puzzle, which we worked on for almost 24 hours!   It was rough, but in the end we got those kittens married!

Just Married!

We also squeezed in a drive around the lake, a tradition of mine, to check out all the houses that have been remodeled since last summer.  While driving we pulled down a gravel road……

and stumbled upon these…..

Wind turbines!

Another site along the drive….

Lady of the Lake!

Over the course of Saturday and Sunday, three of my best friends from Des Moines arrived, my brother and his fiance stopped by for a quick visit, and my cousin Kristin from DC and her husband and two friends showed up.

With all those people around, we ate a lot, drank a lot, and laughed a lot.   I can’t ever seem to get enough of those people!

Stacy and I on the dock!
Brad, Anna, Sarah, Kristin and Paul
Seeing no evil, hearing no evil, and speaking no evil at the tiki bar!

I thought I would end by sharing a couple of my favorite things about the lake.

Guest Log

Everyone who has stayed at this place over the last 20 plus years has written in this book.  The cabin was originally my great aunt’s and after she passed away the log entries seemed to turn into writing a letter to her about your stay.  It’s so fun to look back and see the times I wrote in that book as a kid when I still wrote my z’s backwards.

Finally, the most beautiful sunsets have been viewed from this spot.

This place has been in my family for 50 years and I hope it never changes!  I can’t wait to make many more memories there with a family of my own one day!
